How to Fix Frozen or Stuck Update on 11th Generation Honda Vehicles
Summary
I’ll start off by saying that I am not a mechanic. In fact, I actually work in cybersecurity- which might explain how I figured out how to fix this issue. For weeks, every time I started the car, it would pop up with a banner saying “update paused.” When I checked the update, it would always be stuck at 62% complete but never make progress. Fortunately, I found a fix.
My car is a 2025 Civic Si, but the steps should apply to any modern Honda vehicles including Honda Accord, Civic, CRV, and other models with the built-in entertainment system.
Initial Troubleshooting
Like everyone in the tech sector, I first tried to restart the system by holding the Home + Radio power button for about 10 seconds then choosing “Reboot.” Unfortunately for me, this did not resolve the issue. However, I would highly recommend you try this first since it could be a quicker fix to this problem.
Next, I tried booting to safe mode by following the same process as above but choosing “Safe Mode” instead of “Reboot.” It still didn’t work at this point.
The Solution
Do the following while still in safe mode (you might not need to be in safe mode, but I did it anyway to stop any apps from interfering).
Go to Settings > Security > Clear credentials > Click OK.
This will clear any expired certificates from your system. My hypothesis is that the certificates cached on the system are expiring before the update has a chance to complete, causing the frozen update.
Testing the Fix
After trying the above fix, check to see if it is resolved. Go to Settings > Advanced Settings > System > System update and it should resume downloading momentarily. Fair warning, it is still going to take a long time to complete depending on your Wi-Fi signal.
If it still does not work, try to turn off the Wi-Fi on your car then reconnect.
If all else fails, you could also try a factory reset. Though if that does not fix the issue, you may need to call your Honda Dealership.
